DarkNova — Feedback Bus Compressor
A transformerless feedback bus compressor in the S-Type lineage. Where most modern bus compressors use a feedforward detector, DarkNova taps the signal after the VCA — the same topology found in dbx 165A, and early SSL G prototypes. The result is the rounded, polite “glue” character that feedback bus comps are famous for: softer knee, program-dependent lag, and inherent safety at high ratios.
Under the hood:
- THAT2181 VCA modeling with GR-dependent 3rd-order non-linearity
- THAT2252-style log-domain RMS detector with London-mode (summed mono) sidechain
- Built-in 6-band sidechain EQ for surgical detector shaping
- Multiband tonal shaping on the output
- Sidechain HPF (Off / 60 / 90 / 120 Hz)
- Variable knee with input-gain compensation
- A lot of transformers
- Saturation stage and real-time FFT analyzer
- Class-A op-amp input/output stages (+20dBu headroom)
- Up to 8x oversampling
