DarkGate — Intelligent Drum Gate

A specialized noise gate built specifically for drums — not a generic threshold gate, but an intelligent, spectral analysis-driven gate that understands the difference between a snare hit and hi-hat bleed. Built around Mel-frequency spectral analysis, multi-method onset detection, and cross-band correlation, DarkGate finally solves the eternal problem: gating drums without artifacts, false triggers, or chopped tails.

Intelligent gating engine:

• Mel-frequency spectral analysis — analyzes the perceptual frequency content of each hit, not just amplitude
• Multi-method onset detection — combines spectral flux, energy, and phase coherence for reliable hit detection
• Cross-band correlation — rejects bleed by comparing frequency-band relationships (a kick has different cross-band content than a snare; a snare has different content than a hi-hat)
• Temporal pattern matching — recognizes the temporal fingerprint of each drum type
• Adaptive thresholding — adjusts to changing program material automatically
• Context-aware gating — doesn’t chop ghost notes or rolls

Instrument-specific tuning:

• Kick — low-frequency-weighted detection, long body preservation
• Snare — transient-focused with rim/body discrimination
• Toms — pitch-aware detection across the kit
• Cymbals — high-frequency continuity preservation, no chopping

Controls:

• Threshold (-60 to 0 dB)
• Reduction (0 to 80 dB) — how much to attenuate below threshold
• Length (0 to 2000 ms) — hold time
• DeBleed (0–100%) — aggressiveness of bleed rejection
• Ghost mode — preserves quiet ghost notes that would be cut by traditional gates
• Ghost Level (0–100%)
• Sidechain — external trigger input
• Output (-12 to +12 dB)
• Instrument selector — Kick / Snare / Toms / Cymbals
